Seamen’s Church Visits Kongsberg

Friday December 12, Marit & Ellen Marie from the Seamen’s Church visited Kongsberg  in Alexandria for a short briefing and tour. They brought with them  everything they needed to make real Norwegian ‘vafler”. Thank you to the representatives from the church for taking time to bring some christmas spirit and Norwegian traditions to the office. NACCMA was very lucky to take part in this tasteful event.                   

Norway’s Bicentennial Birthday Party Celebration – Norwegian Embassy

Monday, December 8, NACCMA members participated in celebrating Norway’s Bicentennial “birthday party” last Monday, hosted by the Royal Norwegian Embassy and Ambassador Kåre Aas. The event took place at the Embassy, and included an art exhibition, book-sale, brass band and guest were served a traditional Norwegian birthday cake (lit with 200 candles!) Thank you to the Embassy for a great event and celebration! Norway1814-2014    

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Union Station, Washington DC

December 1 2014, The Annual Norwegian Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Union Station in Washington, D.C. took place last night! A beautiful ceremony with christmas carols from carollers of greater Washington DC, performance from Sami Artist and Author Ms. Sara Margrethe Oskal, as well as remarks from Ambassador Kåre Aas and Senator Ann Klobuchar. Thank you to the Embassy and everyone organizing for a great event and beautiful ceremony.        

Statsraad Lehmkuhl visits Norfolk

November 14, 2014  STATSRAAD LEHMKUHL, a three-masted barque rigged vessel, visited Norfolk last week.  The vessel is used to train sailors from the Royal Norwegian Navy.  She was built in 1914 by the German merchant marine.  England received her as war-price after World War I and was later sold to Norway.  On November 14, the Royal Norwegian Navy and the Norwegian NATO contingency in Norfolk hosted a reception onboard.  Although cold it was well attended and as always (this is the 10th year she is visiting Norfolk) everyone onboard had a wonderful time. November 14, 2014 Team Norway participated in a two-day conference at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington DC. Team Norway consists of representatives from the Norwegian Embassy in DC and Ottawa, representatives from the various General Consulates in the US, Innovation Norway, Norwegian Seafood Council, Norwegian American Defense industry/Homeland Security Council, and Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce (New York and Mid-Atlantic). The meeting was hosted by His Excellency, Ambassador Kåre Aas, and included many interesting topics and discussions around the US-Norwegian trade and investment relationship. October 8, 2014  NACCMA hosted the Annual “Welcome to Washington DC” Dinner Cruise on board the Spirit of Washington Yacht, which sails south down the Potomac river. This wonderful evening was spent with Embassy staff, members and guests of NACCMA and on this occasion we welcomed the new Embassy Representatives to DC. Sept 15, 2014 The Norwegian Nansen-class frigate has this summer participated in the world’s largest naval exercise, RIMPAC, in Hawaii. BUSINESS ONBOARD was a Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce industry event comprising a mini-seminar with prominent speakers from the Norwegian Gov’t, military and industry, followed by a networking reception on board HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen (F310).

Last week from Monday to Wednesday, the Royal Norwegian Embassy hosted its annual Transatlantic Science Week conference at the Washington Hilton. The event was a huge success, bringing speakers from the Peace Research Institute Oslo, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Research Council of Norway, as well as several Norwegian and American universities. The speakers were arranged into panels to speak on topics relating to “Shared Solutions to Common Challenges,” the title of this year’s event.
