Chef Mikko Kosonen is expanding his Nordic themed catering business and opening a café in Dupont Circle this spring. Expect house-smoked salmon piled on thinly sliced home-made rye bread; herring made a plethora of ways; buckwheat blinis piled with fresh sour cream, onions, and caviar; homemade soups filled with hearty root vegetables from local sources; and mushroom and beet-root salads just like you would find in food halls and farmers markets in Stockholm and Helsinki.

Chef Mikko has been a fixture of the Washington food scene for over 21 years. He served 15 years as the Chef to the Finnish Ambassador. He has been running his own high-end catering firm for the past five years. His current list of clients include Ambassadors and other members of D.C.’s diplomatic corps. He has cooked for presidents and princesses. Now he is excited to introduce Nordic food to all Washington.

He expects to open his new café sometime in April 2018. Look for it on R Street, NW, just east of 17th Street, NW. You can’t miss it: it is painted the blues and reds of the Nordic country flags.

Chef Mikko started cooking at the age of 13 at his family’s restaurant “Cassi” in Stockholm, Sweden. He trained at the prestigious Helsinki Culinary School and honed his skills at the Havis Amanda restaurant in Helsinki, which enjoys a reputation as one of the finest fish and seafood restaurants in all of Finland and at the Belvedere Hotel In Annecy, France, also famous for its fish and seafood.
