Seafood & Aquaculture Meeting
February 3rd, 2004

The Seafood & Aquaculture Committee, chaired by Thor Lassen, held a networking and social event on February 3, 2004. The meeting was held in conjunction with the visit of Asmund Bjordal, Research Director at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, and to introduce Otto Gregussen, Fisheries Counselor, Merethe Nergaard, Minister Counselor Economic Affairs, and Anne Kjersti.Shaw, First Secretary Political Section from the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington. Asmund Bjordal was visiting Washington D.C. to give a presentation on "Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management" at the US Congressional Friends of Norway Caucus meeting. The Capitol Hill meeting, organized by Thor Lassen of Nordic Ventures, had over 50 members of congress and staff in attendance.

Summary of Discussions

Discussions during the social gathering was broad and touched on subjects related to whaling, EU toll on Norwegian trout, farmed and wild salmon, marine resource management, sea farming of new species, methods of fish health control, legal issues associated with fisheries trade and marketing of seafood products. Committee members Jill Bente Rolland and Thor Lassen discussed their presentations at the upcoming World Aquaculture Society conference and plans for the 2004 International Boston Seafood Show.
