Secretary General Mr. Jan Solberg speaks about merging of foreign services and Norwegian business development organizations.
An informative breakfast meeting with Mr. Jan Solberg, Secretary General of Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry was held at The Madison Hotel, 15th & M Street, NW, Washington D.C. 2005 on December 4, 2003 at 8:30am. Main topic at the meeting was the merging of foreign services and Norwegian business development organizations.

The merger will be effective from January 1, 2004 and will include the following organizations:
- The Norwegian Trade Council
- The Norwegian Tourist Board
- Norwegian Industrial and Regional Development Fund (SND)
- Norwegian Government Consultative Office for Inventors (SVO)
The main purpose of the merger is to create increased innovation and business development for small and medium sized companies in Norway related to:
- Research and increased know-how
- Innovation, development and commercialization
- Internationalization/Globalization
The new organization, Innovation Norway, shall manage funds for the four main categories of financial support listed below:
- Financial support arrangements including grants, loans, guarantees, and own capital
- Advisory and know-how increasing efforts
- Network and infrastructure building
- Profiling of Norwegian industry abroad
Profiling of Norwegian industry abroad includes; marketing and reputation building of the industry and marketing of Norway as an attractive country for tourism and investment.
Innovation Norway shall be a proactive player and set premises for development of network building between government agencies, research and know-how related environments and the industry, and network building shall take place at the regional, national and international levels. Innovation Norway shall not offer products and services in competition with the private industry, but instead use private consultant firms for advisory functions.
